Troves may thrive in the known but often the unexplored. Such is the case when I went to National Bookstore Cubao. The 4th floor has long served as a house for shelves of discounted books. Books can cost as low as P15 though most cost P200. Several months ago, I’ve even managed to rummage a book on Nihonggo and a hardbound book about Henry VIII. However, I still find these books still a bit expensive for something that is supposed to be discounted. The book on Nihonggo, although may be rare, is a little bit on the dilapidated side. It costs P150 (if I remember correctly). I could have bought the book but I thought that it is far more likely that I or anyone in the family will get to use it. The Last Days of Henry VIII by Robert Hutchinson, on the other hand, costs P1000+ so I ended up empty-handed instead.
However, its time to catch on my readings so I decided to go again 3 days ago to score a few good reads. Just my luck, I was able to find Starkey’s The Reign of Henry VIII, Foreman’s Georgina The Duchess of Devonshire, Hickman’s Daughters of Britannia and Moncrief’s Romance and Legend of Chivalry. There are even several copies of Tracy Chevalier’s Virgin Blue stack upon each other. Each book costs P200 each. Just as I was as about to spend P800, the cashier in the counter called my attention only to reprice the books. Starkey’s The Reign of Henry VIII was reprice to P30 while the 3 other books were reprice to P50.
I went home with a triumphant grin plastered on my face. Truly, the good thing about buying a book other than reading is bargain-hunting.
